In this workshop, the participants get an insight into the movement practice and working methods behind the performance “Sixteen Dances”

Dance artists Rannei Grenne and Solveig Styve Holte have over several years explored methods for creating and performing dance based on the work and principles of the American choreographer Merce Cunningham (1919-2009). Cunningham was a pioneer in modern dance who emphasized the formal and abstract, and created experimental collaborations with music and visual arts. Cunningham worked closely with composer John Cage and they created several works together, including “Sixteen Dances” – the first work in which they made use of the “principle of chance”.

In “Sixteen Dances”, Grenne and Holte further develop a material they created in the work on the project “Flakkande røynd” (2018). Where Cunningham’s idiom was largely based on the classical ballet technique, Grenne and Holte execute a more liberal approach to the movements.

The workshop is suitable for those with experience of dance and movement, but you do not need to be a professional dancer to participate. The workshop is held in English, but you can ask questions and have things explained in Norwegian if necessary.

Registration to ingeborg(at)dansit.no. Participation is free of charge!

“Sixteen Dances” is performed at Rosendal Teater Friday 17. and Saturday 18. February at 7pm

The project is produced by DansiT – Choreographic Center in collaboration with SiTron – Sinfonietta in Trondheim, and is supported by Arts and Culture Norway
