Mer informasjon fra Sindri (In English)

We are looking for two dancers/performers that are interested in joining us for our recidency at DansiT, Trondheim in the making of Cosmetic demons: a chroreographic salon. The final piece will premiere in Sweden in april 2024, and as a part of the research and making of the piece and the ”pop up” project, we are creating it together with dancers, communities, and local hairdressers.

In Trondheim you will be meeting us in the middle of our process and get the chance to work with Sindri and Maia, to explore and try out ideas, that will lay the grounds where the project will dance on later. You will meet and dance with us for three days, explore and learn scores and practises we are interested in for the performances of Cosmetic Demons, a mix of somatic practises and form based material, inspired by attention oriented techniques and the inside of our body, such as touch, listening, and breathing, as well as inspiration from fun posing, ballet and jazz influences.

In April we will have the opportunity to perform the pop up versions, as a durational performance twice at the 2024 Multiplié festival. We are looking for dancers with an interest in improvising and performing, with a brave curiousity and open to explore these demon dances together with us.

Preferably you have a background or experience in contemporary dance, and as a performer. In the recruitment process, we will approach an intersectional perspective and strive for diversity in representation. Therefore people of all backgrounds, experiences and ages are warmly welcome to apply.

PROJECT PRESENTATION (In English)

Cosmetic demons: a choreographic salon uses the hair salon as a metaphor for a place where our processes, emotions and inner demons can have a place to be shared and celebrated. The work is presented both through a staged performance and through a series of pop-up events where the visitors indulge in a cosmetic transformation. Both versions of the project will replicate the actual situation of getting one’s hair done by letting haircuts of audience/customers take place in front of an audience. Where the mirror would usually be, there now stands a dancer. The scenery then becomes three hairdressers, three customers getting their hair cut, and three dancers. The rest of the audience can move with partial freedom in the room or sit around the stage on four sides. The work deals with the historical and community-building aspects of gossip and the function of beauty salons through the transformative act of dancing. The project importantly brings light on how beauty salons and the gossip that takes place there have played a vital role within queer- and other minority communities.
The three different relationships – the care of the person in the hairdresser chair, the customer’s spectating of the dance and the audience that witnesses the whole spectacle from the outside – intertwine and inform each other. It creates a space for both introspection and reflection. In this way the project artistically deals with multiple perspectives of how we look at dance, while unfolding the theme of gossip as a secret (and sacred) process. As in all of Sindris works, the sonic perspective is in focus. Field-recordings of gossip, personal conversations and the ambient sounds of different salons will be used in creating text and music for the piece.

The project becomes a bombastic and extravagant staging of a simple action – the familiar situation of getting one’s hair cut – and turns it into a both lived and fictive experience.
We work with the intimate space of trust and care that comes with cosmetic work. Instead of discarding it as a superficial bettering, we imagine it as an act of ornamenting our inside demons. The demons arise like a distant lapdance, springing from the need for change and transformation. The dancers allow this need and longing to appear and be celebrated.

In every city/venue we play, we will invite local hairdressers to be part of the performance and we will investigate local hair salons and the culture around them. We are looking into the possibility of giving each customer a catalogue with a set of dances they can choose from. Here, the audience can also pick up gossip, unexpected facts from local hairdressers, and fictional and real texts about the dances that are performed. Like an extended program text, the catalogue will be part of making the work accessible by using different mediums.

The project has two formats. The stage performance will be made for a black box, an expressive, colourful and atmospheric scenario, with nine people on stage including the three dancers, three customers, three hairdressers and a large audience.
The other format of the project is ”the pop up version”, which focuses more on the community work and engaging with other events, places, and contexts, such as festivals and home visits. In this version, the performance can take place with either all three or only one hairdressing chair. The one-to-one sessions could be private or exhibited as a choreographic installation that accompanies and plays with shared spaces such as foyers, galleries, and public spaces. In the pop-up version we aim to work with both local dancers and hairdressers. This gives the project the potential for intimate settings as well as open durational sessions.
The concept of cosmetic demons are inspired by an ancient meditation and therapy method called “feeding your demons”, explained in a book by the buddhist nun Lama Tsultrim Allione. It is also informed by the queer and minority history of gossip that is still thriving. As a choreographer and performer, Sindri continues to work with a playful and humoristic approach, using joy and fashion as tools for queer perspectives and perception-politics.
