Imogen Reeve & Co – Mother Computer: Folk Dances From The Future
Residency week 21 / 2026
In week 21 British Imogen Reeve & Co is in residency at DansiT / Svartlamon to work on their newest choreographic work Mother Computer: Folk Dances From the Future
Designed as a trio for both indoor and outdoor settings, the project reimagines traditional folk dance and storytelling practices through a feminist lens that responds to urgent questions of today — including gender bias in artificial intelligence, digital isolation, and the changing nature of community.
Drawing on collective movement structures found in folk traditions, the choreography moves between moments of shared rhythm and deliberate disruption. Dancers gather, separate, collide and reorganise — reflecting how connection and belonging shift within technologically mediated worlds. Where traditional folk practices once centred physical closeness and communal ritual, Mother Computer explores how those dynamics are transformed in the digital age.
Visually, the work incorporates reflective, metallic materials that suggest both robotics and futurism. Activated by the performers, these materials transform — becoming cloud-like, river-like, and occasionally mythical — evoking the way technological systems reshape ideas of nature, myth and collective imagination.
Rather than illustrating technology, the work approaches these themes through embodied research: using choreography to think through how systems of power, bias and connection are felt in the body.
The project is being developed collaboratively with performers and creative partners through an ongoing research process.

Movement Labs invite professional dancers and experienced movement enthusiasts into a shared space of experimentation — working with tightly structured improvisation and choreographic textures developed by the company over the past five years.
What to expect
Each session begins with a rigorous, voice-led warm-up — somatic, energetic and relational — before moving into detailed choreographic textures.
These repeatable movement structures act as research tools, designed to:
- expand movement range and quality
- challenge habitual patterns
- build clarity, adaptability and precision
You’ll move between structure and freedom — working collectively through witnessing, copying, drifting and flocking, as the space shifts between individual and shared experience.
The approach
Movement Labs are not about fixed outcomes. They are about process, attention and possibility.
Participants are invited into a decentralised learning environment where:
- hierarchies are softened
- agency is shared
- movement is continuously reshaped
This is a space for rigour, play and the emergence of new movement languages.
Om Imogen Reeve
Imogen Reeve is a UK-based choreographer and artistic director working at the intersection of contemporary dance theatre, technology, and feminist performance practice.
Leading a research-led dance company with an international outlook, her work radically reimagines the relationship between bodies and machines – creating performances and choreographic systems in which humans and emerging technologies collide.
Through a distinct contemporary dance language, Imogen explores body and technology in performance, challenging dominant narratives around gender, agency, and embodiment. Her work sits at the forefront of UK contemporary dance, offering audiences encounters with new performance forms that merge physical practice, feminist thinking, and critical inquiry.
Rooted in feminist thought, her practice interrogates the biases embedded in emerging technologies and repositions the body as a site of resistance, intelligence, and transformation. Through performance, research, and studio-based development, she creates dance theatre that is both conceptually rigorous and physically arresting.
Imogen is a distinctive voice within contemporary dance in the UK and internationally – pushing choreographic practice into uncharted, provocative territory.
