Geir Hytten – WHITEOUT

Residency week 13 / 2025

WHITEOUT is the second of three performances in which Geir Hytten explores different aspects of affect. They are all extensions of his Master’s thesis in human geography (2022) and serve as a backdrop for exploring environmental issues through dance. The project seeks to develop strategies that bring the unresolved to the surface—where “ugly feelings” refuse to let go and pull you through uncomfortable encounters on stage.

In WHITEOUT, the audience is drawn into a darkness and an encounter with certain “ugly feelings.” They are gradually exposed to a strange white light and a state referred to as “whiteout.” This condition reflects a phenomenon that can occur when visibility is severely reduced because the air is so filled with snow that normal points of reference disappear—much like our blurred navigation of the current climate crisis.

About the artist

Geir Hytten is a Norwegian dancer and choreographer. He holds an MA in Dance from Laban in London and an MPhil in Human Geography from the University of Oslo. In the UK, he danced for a decade with Punchdrunk, as well as with Lea Anderson and Complicite. In Norway, he has collaborated with choreographers such as Jo Strømgren, Impure Company, and Karstein Solli. He has created several of his own performances, including Red Flag, which was presented at DansiT in 2024. Most recently, he performed in the trio Dancing by legendary American choreographer Deborah Hay in 2025.
