People of DansiT: Stig Berg
People of DansiT is a portrait series featuring the people in and around DansiT. Today, we meet DansiT’s Technical Manager, Stig Berg.
– What is your relationship with DansiT?
– My relationship with DansiT began many years ago when I was working as a freelancer. Through DansiT, I’ve experienced an incredible variety of performing arts and broadened my understanding of what performing arts can be.
– What inspires you these days?
– I’m usually inspired by collaboration. Lately, I’ve been especially inspired by the work we’re doing around accessibility, exploring how we can best communicate performing arts—for example, to audiences with visual impairments.
– What is your relationship with dance and the performing arts?
– My connection to dance has mainly come through my work. I’m definitely not much of a dancer myself and feel most at home behind the scenes. That said, I really enjoy working with everything from music, dance and theatre to other forms of performing arts without being a performing artist myself.
– What do you enjoy most about working with sound and lighting for performances?
– I enjoy collaborating with artists and designers to find good technical solutions. Sometimes a practical approach can solve an artistic challenge; other times, the artistic vision pushes the technology in new directions. I think that’s a really exciting dynamic.
– What would you be doing if you weren’t working as a technician?
– If I could choose freely, I think I’d probably be teaching stage technology at a folk high school. But if it had to be something completely outside my current field, maybe I’d become a carpenter.
– What are you looking forward to most this summer?
– Having some time off and staying in one place. I usually spend the whole summer touring, but this year I have the opportunity to stay home for a few weeks, and I’m really looking forward to that.
– What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not working?
– I don’t have many hobbies, but I really appreciate the times I get to go hiking in the mountains with friends. It’s a great way to clear my head.
