Knocking – Horacio Macuacua / Norrdans (MZ/SE)

Welcome to a physical dance experience that will keep you at the end of your seat. The rhythm knocks. On doors, in the chest, through the floor. It speaks before we have words, it moves us before we understand.

Horácio Macuacua lets rhythm become the body: a language of muscle, sweat, and breath. It is gravity and liberation, weight and play. Can you feel it?

The Norrdans ensemble is swept into a powerful current, lifted by its relentless force. They fall, rise, and breathe in a shared tempo. Here, rhythm becomes a universal alphabet — fusing us into one body, one space, one moment.Rhythm is not mere accompaniment, but a language of its own. It pulses through music, footsteps, the room, the breath.

Knocking celebrates rhythm as a language unto itself. The rhythm of music, footsteps, the room, a breath, a feeling. It delves into the intimate connection we create with rhythm in all its forms, both external and internal, revealing its power to unify, communicate, and transform.

It becomes a relationship we hold and are held by — a force knocking on the doors of untold stories within us. Together, we move toward something profound, like a pulse weaving us into one.

About the choreographer

The Mozambican dancer and choreographer Horácio Macuacua is the artistic director of the dance company that bears his name. Macuacua develops projects aimed at going beyond established forms. With an open mind and a readiness to capture the moment, movement is immediately transformed into compositions that are complex and refined, with both depth and playfulness, darkness and light. Each composition is a journey to reshape and reinvent within the framework of meaning-making.

His acclaimed projects include COMUM, Orobroy, Stop! (winner of the Danse l’Afrique Danse Festival 2010), Smile If You Can!, Fighting Room, Convoy, Paradise is not in the sky!, Theka, Mugangueni, I am tired, and Here’s to Life. He has collaborated with Cristina Moura, Thomas Hauert, Pablo Colbert, George Khumalo, Wim Vandekeybus/Última Vez, and his mentor David Zambrano. Macuacua has also taught workshops across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
