“Everything comes alive when contradictions accumulate”: Workshop i improvisasjon, tilstedeværelse og uttrykk

Jules arbeid fokuserer på å knytte vår primære dyriske intuisjon til det moderne menneskeliv. Målet er å forlate domestisering, kaste om på vanlige hierarkier og gjenvinne vår grunnleggende villhet der instinkter fungerer som en frigjørende kraft.

Vi starter med en guidet utforsking med lukkede øyne. Jules oppfordrer til en pause fra forutbestemt handling til fordel for kun å observere fenomenene sanseinntrykk, glede, nysgjerrighet og bevegelser som de er skapt i kroppen. Dette gir tid og rom dedikert til vår akvatiske opprinnelse. Gleden av å skyve inn i gulvet, rommet og hverandre vekker skjelettet og dets levende, utviklende arkitektur.

Senere, med øynene åpne, leker vi med klokketid og begrenset plass, og valg som en bevisst prosess. Oppgaver og rytme- og stemmearbeid som aktiverer den sosiale kroppen introduseres, og vi leker med improvisasjoner i et avgrenset rom, ofte i duoer eller trioer. Vi deler hvordan det føles å se og bli sett. Vi utforsker primær oppfatning, strategier for trivsel, grunnlag for improvisasjon, og orientering- og forankringsteknikker.

Dette er en post-kontaktimprovisasjons-intensiv, noe som betyr at vi er informert av, men ikke begrenset til, kodene for kontaktimprovisasjon. Vi vil berøre, danse, synge, skrive og oppleve tilstander av bevissthet på ukjente måter.

BIO

Jules Beckman is an American interdisciplinary performing artist and teacher, living in France since 2002. He has been making work collaboratively, teaching, and touring internationally steadily in contemporary dance, performance and circus since 1987. Current performance work includes: Jan Lauwers & Needcompany (Marketplace 76; The Blind Poet; The Time Between Two Mistakes; The House of Our Fathers), Libertivore (Pleasure Test) and Mia Habib (A song to…). Past collaborators include: Collectif AOC/Karin Vyncke; Animal Religion; Libertivore/Fanny Soriano; I.D.A./Mark Tompkins; Cahin-caha, cirque bâtard; Lhasa De Sela; Keith Hennessy, Jess Curtis, Stanya Kahn, Stephanie Maher, Anna Halprin, Meg Stuart, Zaccho/Joanna Haigood, Contraband/Sara Shelton Mann. Jules composed and performed the music for Closing Acts in the circus dept. of DOCH in Stockholm. Jules was offered roles with Stomp and Blue Man Group. Jules’s collaborations include twenty-one full-evening original works, many shorter pieces and innumerable improvised performances.

Jules Beckman – “Everything comes alive when contradictions accumulate”: Workshop in improvisation, presence and performance

My teaching work focuses on connecting our primal animal intuition to contemporary human life. Our objective is to abandon domestication, invert habitual hierarchies and reclaim our basic wildness in which instinct acts as a liberating force.

We start with a guided eyes-closed exploration. I encourage the suspension of willful action in favor of simply witnessing the phenomena of sensation, pleasure, curiosity and movement as it is born in the body. This is time/space slowed to our aquatic origins. The pleasure of pushing into the floor, the space and each other awakens the skeleton and its living, evolving architectures.

Later with our eyes open, we play with clock-time, and finite space, and choice as a conscious process. Games and rhythm- and voice work that activate the social body is introduced, and we play with improvisations in a defined space, often in duos or trios. We share how it feels to see and be seen. We explore primal perception, strategies for thriving, foundations of improvisation, and orientation and anchoring techniques.

This is a post Contact Improvisation intensive, which means we are informed by, but not limited to, the codes of CI. We will touch, dance, sing, write and experience states of consciousness in unfamiliar ways.
